A breath of French joie de vivre blew through our beloved Odenwald wine island on 14 July 2026. This year’s Dîner en bleu blanc rouge was a resounding success and a shining example of European friendship in practice. Although the weather services had stubbornly predicted ominous rain beforehand, the sky was extraordinarily kind to us. The evening stayed wonderfully dry, so all guests could linger carefree under the open sky and enjoy the cheerful celebration. Such magical moments impressively show how deeply rooted the friendship with our partner towns is in our hearts. Our twinning with Saint-Péray has existed since 1966. Santo Tirso has enriched our network since 1988, and Dicomano completed our European clover leaf in 2010. Through encounters like this, the often abstract notion of Europe becomes a tangible, warm reality for all of us.
Culinary variety and cosy togetherness in the Wendelinuspark
The concept of the evening was as wonderfully simple as it was unifying: every guest brought their own delicious creations and lovingly packed picnic baskets to share in a big, sociable circle. The tables, festively decorated in the national colours of France, were filled to the very last seat in no time. But the citizens of Groß-Umstadt once again proved their charming flexibility and keen sense of true community. Without further ado, countless visitors found an extremely comfortable spot on the stone steps of the idyllic Wendelinuspark and on the surrounding benches. It is precisely this delightfully informal atmosphere that fosters the genuine cultural exchange and shared humanist worldview that our charitable twinning stands for with passion.
Musical bridge-builders for international understanding
“Ullis lustige Drehorgel” first provided the perfect musical backdrop, immediately conjuring a radiant smile onto the faces of those present with its nostalgic and cheerful sounds. It is precisely this traditional, handmade music that connects generations and provides the ideal setting for stimulating conversation. Later in the evening, as dusk slowly settled over the square, atmospheric French chansons from the loudspeakers took over. They wrapped the entire park in an incomparably romantic cloud of sound reminiscent of mild summer nights in the distant Ardèche. When darkness finally fell, the Dîner en bleu blanc rouge unfolded its very special visual magic.
