From 9 to 13 July 2025 a delegation of around 40 people from Groß-Umstadt visited our Portuguese partner town of Santo Tirso. The occasion was the time-honoured São Bento festival, which draws thousands of people to the town every year – with music, culture, dance and a deep connection to the history of the Benedictine order.
🎉 A festival of encounter and friendship
Already at the welcome at the airport we were greeted warmly – the hospitality was as overwhelming as ever. Together with delegations from France, Belgium and Spain we took part in a varied festival programme that combines tradition and modernity.
On the central Praça 25 de Abril, concerts, dance and shows awaited us. Whether at dinner in the Wine House, at the official receptions or at the ceremonial festive Mass in honour of São Bento – everywhere one felt the deep cultural bond and the great joy of being together.
🥁 Music, processions and a firework of emotions
A highlight was the big drum parade through the town centre, in which we marched side by side with groups from Saint-Péray and Santo Tirso. Just as moving: the ceremonial procession in honour of São Bento with music, scouts and many spectators along the streets.
There was plenty on offer culturally too: visits to the Benedictine monastery, the Fábrica de Santo Thyrso and musical performances by, among others, Daniela Mercury and Mariza rounded off the programme. The crowning finale was a pyromusical show – music and fireworks in perfect harmony above the Rio Ave.
Our delegation looks back with joy and gratitude on these special days. The São Bento festival was far more than a trip – it was a piece of lived town twinning. We thank our hosts for their openness, warmth and the many unforgettable encounters. 💛
The return visit from Santo Tirso for the Winzerfest is already planned – we look forward to the next reunion! 🇩🇪🤝🇵🇹
