The past weekend will remain vividly in all our memories for a very long time. With temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius we experienced an exceptionally hot but fantastically well-attended festival on the historic market square. The Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt once again brought the pulsating life of our Portuguese partner town directly to us at home. It was a festival of the senses that impressively demonstrated the deep roots of our international friendships.
The enormous heat above all demanded a lot from organisers and guests, but the Odenwald wine island showed its most creative side. To make the high-summer temperatures more bearable, refreshing water misters were promptly installed on the large parasols. This clever idea was received with great gratitude and enthusiasm by the many visitors. The Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt thus turned into a tropical oasis of good spirits in which the oppressive heat could absolutely not dampen the exuberant mood.
A refreshing water paradise on the market square
A very special thank-you goes here to the dedicated volunteer fire brigade of our home town. On Saturday and Sunday the volunteer helpers arrived with a large emergency vehicle and provided the ultimate, life-saving cooling-off. The market square was promptly turned into a bubbling water paradise that had no equal in the entire region. Young and old couldn’t resist dancing through the cool fountains of water and washing the summer heat away.
Such shared, carefree experiences are the true heart of our ambitious work in the committee. Thanks to the large Portuguese community that has found a second home in Groß-Umstadt, this partnership was a perfectly natural step. Santo Tirso lies in the green north of Portugal, near Porto, and is widely known as a textile and wine town. When we laugh together at the Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt, celebrate exuberantly and cool off together, this theoretical concept of international understanding becomes a lived, wonderful reality.
Musical highlights and Portuguese rhythms
The musical programme at this year’s Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt left absolutely nothing to be desired and swept the audience along. The furious kick-off came on Friday evening from the band Watertight, who made the market square tremble after the official opening. On Saturday and Sunday Vitor Costa then provided southern flair on the main stage with his sounds. Another highlight was the performance of the well-known Portuguese singer Miro Freitas late on Saturday evening.
Between these concerts the folk group Rancho Folclórico transported us into the rich tradition of our Portuguese partner towns. With their dances and authentic music they celebrated, together with the “Roten Teufel” and the crackling midsummer bonfire, a festival of pure joie de vivre. This wonderful cultural exchange impressively shows how the manifold influences in our town blend harmoniously. You will find further exciting insights into our activities on the overview page of our twinning.
Doing good together: the big raffle
A very special attraction on the festival grounds this year was our exciting raffle, which brought beaming faces. At the small raffle guests could look forward to guaranteed instant prizes, because every ticket bought was a winner. The great suspense was then released on Sunday afternoon at 4 pm when the main prizes were drawn on stage. One lucky winner was able to enjoy the sensational top prize: a brand-new e-scooter.
We would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts all the sponsors whose generously donated prizes made this fantastic campaign possible. The best thing about this raffle, however, is the good cause behind it, which unites us all. The entire proceeds of the campaign go directly to the association for children with cancer and chronic illness (Verein für krebskranke und chronisch kranke Kinder e. V.) in Darmstadt. It is a wonderful feeling to know that at the Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt we don’t just celebrate but can actively help.
The Rote Teufel and an unforgettable night
We experienced the absolute musical highlight late on Saturday evening. The folk group Rancho Folclórico, together with the so-called “Rote Teufel”, created an incredibly rousing atmosphere on stage. With their driving rhythms and traditional dances they completely captivated the audience at the Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt. It was a fascinating spectacle that transported the rich and colourful culture of Portugal directly into our Hessian home.
When the official festival programme finally came to its well-deserved end, the almost endless energy had by no means faded. The Rote Teufel and the last party-hungry guests joined forces spontaneously and walked noisily singing through the dark streets. Their shared destination was the COP, the popular Porto Club in Umstadt. There the enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch the thrilling Portuguese national team match together at 1:30 am sharp and turn night into day.
Become part of our borderless friendship
Such magical nights impressively prove that lived twinning goes far beyond official certificates and formal meetings. It thrives on genuine emotions, infectious spontaneity and the deep bond between the people celebrating. The Johannisfest Groß-Umstadt has shown us all once again how incredibly enriching and beautiful cultural exchange with our European neighbours is. We look back with gratitude and pride on this hot but thoroughly successful festival weekend.
